One way I get my audio jollies is to create lengthy MP3 playlists fashioned after radio broadcasts. My format is this: Station identification followed by five tunes, commercial break, station identification, five more tunes, commercial break, station identification, et cetera. I've amassed quite a cache of retro radio ads, a few originating with Basic Hip (back in the day when he was occasionally offering them) and the remainder acquired from quiet little corners of the web which have since vanished without a trace. Here are three particularly fabulous brief interruptions:

1. The CBS Thursday Night Movie
2. Chevy Chevelle
3. The Born Losers

I wasted no time getting my hands on eight digitally encoded vinyl discs of instrumental goodness (plus a bonus album!) which were lovingly assembled and are graciously distributed by Basic Hip Digital Gold. It's the same place from which I snagged one of my most favorite 1970s soundtracks, Hammersmith Is Out.

The vocal track is a bit of a clunker, but the rest is sultry and funky and rocking in a fuzzed-out sort of way. It seems odd to me that the album has never made its way onto CD. And while a VHS copy of the film itself might be obtained - though likely not very easily - it's not on DVD. I'd like to think that when the day comes that I manage to view the movie that I find it as fantastic as its soundtrack. Unfortunately, recent viewings of 1970s flicks which for a long time I'd been waiting to see have been huge letdowns, a retooled Phillip Marlowe and nitroglycerin in South America being two perfect examples.

Anyway, enjoy a Hammersmith track (then go score the entire score)!:
